Yalong River Lianghekou Hydropower Station Put into Official Operation

2021-09-30

The Yalong River Lianghekou Hydropower Station, a gigantic hydropower project with total installed electricity generating capacity of 3 million kilowatts, was put into official operation on September 29, 2021.

The Lianghekou hydropower project lies approximately 3,000 meters above the sea level, the highest attitude of its kind in China, and comprises a gravel-soil-core rockfill dam, a world level of such dam.Chairman Bai Tao of SDIC Group was interviewed by China Central Television or CCTV, briefing the operation of the mega hydropower project and the prospect of clean energy development in the Yalong River Basin. The interview was broadcast on "Xinwen Lianbo", the prime time evening news program of CCTV.

Chairman Bai said that when construction of the Lianghekou Hydropower Station is completed, the increased volume of its regulated power generation is equivalent to three times of the power station's own generation capacity, or equivalent to the combined annual output of four large coal mines each with an annual production of 4 million tons of coal, which is incredible in terms of energy saving and emission reduction. By 2030, the installed capacity of hydropower generators in the Yalong River Basin will reach 23 million kilowatts while the installed generation capacity of wind mills, solar power and pump-storage hydroelectricity facilities will hit 25 million kilowatts, with their combined installation of electricity generating capacities reaching about 50 million kilowatts, which will make the Yalong River Basin a "green engine" of the country's new type power system.

The Yalong River Lianghekou Hydropower Station developed by SDIC Group is located in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. With approved investment totaling 66.457 billion yuan RMB, the hydropower project commenced in October 2014. The gravel-soil-core dam is 295 meters high, the second highest in the world. The Lianghekou Hydropower Station has the largest groups of high slopes among the world's hydropower projects, the highest flood water head among hydropower projects in the country and a complicated flood discharge facility with highest flood discharge velocity in the country. The Lianghekou Hydropower Station is the leading project of the Yalong River Basin Hydropower Development Company in the middle reaches of the Yalong River, and also a strategic project of the country and Sichuan Province in the structure readjustment of optimizing energy supply in China's western development program.

CCTV broadcast the news of the official operation of the Yalong River Lianghekou Hydropower Station on its prime time evening news program "Xinwen Lianbo" on September 29, 2021. The news broadcast says: Today, the first two units of generators of the Yalong River Lianghekou Hydropower Station located in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province is put into official operation. The hydropower project is equipped with a total installed generating capacity of 3 million kilowatts, it creates a reservoir with a storage capacity of 10.8 billion cubic meters and it lies approximately 3,000 meters above the sea level. The Lianghekou Hydropower Station is an iconic project of hydropower project development in high attitude and cold regions in the country.
